Lot 138: Wu Zuoren: Fish Playing Among Waterweeds

Based on the provided information, this painting, *Playing Among Water Plants*, primarily features swimming fish, duckweed, and aquatic plants and leaves. Several goldfish are depicted scattered in the lower part of the painting, their dark backs and pale gray tails creating a charming contrast, accented by touches of vermilion, adding a lively touch. Above, the blue-ink duckweed and small flowers echo each other, giving the painting a sense of movement within its simplicity. From a visual perspective, the work employs a vertical composition, with large areas of blank space creating a sense of spaciousness in the water. The fish are not densely packed, but rather arranged in varying density, height, and perspective to create a sense of movement. The viewer's eye can follow the fish's shadows from bottom to top, turning into the aquatic plants and leaves. The blue duckweed is mainly rendered with boneless ink washes, the ink blocks deep and the outer edges naturally blended. The fish tails are mostly depicted with light ink, the varying shades conveying a sense of swaying in the water. The inscription and seal in the lower left corner provide a stable visual conclusion, making the overall composition more complete. This work employs a simple and unadorned style, focusing on capturing the lively spirit of fish playing in the water and the serene tranquility of the rippling surface. The colors are elegant, with a balanced contrast between ink, blue, gray, and red, possessing both the generalization of modern ink painting and retaining the subtle and ethereal aesthetic appeal of traditional flower-and-bird painting. The painting shown in the image exhibits slight natural aging and minor blemishes; the complete mounting and actual condition should be verified by examining the actual piece. As a decorative piece, this type of subject matter symbolizes leisure and tranquility, suitable for placement in a study, tea room, hall, or elegant reception space. Collectors can focus on the use of negative space and the creation of a sense of water, as well as the graceful movements of the fish conveyed with just a few strokes.
