Description: Artist statement: My paintings weave together the systems of science, philosophy, and religion to create graphic, abstract paintings that reflect on the relationship between man and the natural world. Drawing on my research of the Anthropocene, physical and metaphysical cosmology, and Medieval-era Europe and Japan, I blur historical timelines and cultural origins to evoke sublime infinite spaces (deep space, skies, and seas), but which are actually no-places that exist between abstraction and reality, theory and truth. These paintings, typically created with oil or gouache and gold leaf, fuse seemingly oppositional forces: chance and control, luminosity and darkness, minimalism and decadence.
