Viewing Notes: Mr. & Mrs. Goddard Dubois acquired a large collection of ancient art during their extended excursion to Egypt early 1900s. All pieces were loaned and exhibited at major museums: necklaces loaned to Metropolitan museum in 1920 opening of the Jewel Room plus some artifacts. Necklaces were transferred and exhibited: Boston Museum 1940-65. Entire collection loaned and exhibited at Museum of Man, then returned to family. Winning bidders will receive all copied paperwork: in addition where Museum # shows in Exhibited Section, (Met:copied catalog card 1920 Boston:copied group inventory photo)plus addl paperwork where relevant to each lot including copy of Josephine's handwritten inventory notes if listed NOTES. Goddard and Josephine Dubois developed a passion for Egyptian antiquities during their time in Egypt (1900-06) and became experts at assessing ancient art. In Josephine's letters, she writes meeting and consulting with archeologist Alessandro Barsanti in Egypt. Josephine was particularly proud of her collection of necklaces: some were original arrangements, others she created to match similar examples at the Cairo Museum and some were arranged "with the purpose of producing the most harmonious & effective combinations of form and color with pleasing results" as explained in the 1920 Metropolitan Museum Bulletin of loans commemorating the 50th Anniversary Exhibition. The auction provides the public with a singular opportunity to acquire a unique piece of antiquity with exemplary provenance and paperwork. Egyptian and ancient artifacts are becoming harder to find with this type of history which makes them all the more valuable to own.
