Welcome to auction sale 117, a wide ranging sale with multitudes of attractive coins, medals, and banknotes.

The outstanding and valuable rarity in the sale is the 1920 Sydney sovereign, consigned by the grandson of Jacob Garrard. This example becomes the fifth known of the rarest sovereign (lot 1267) and carries an estimate of $600,000.

The late Robert Deane’s collection includes an Adelaide pound, purchased at Sale 2, November 1978 for $2,200, and now estimated at $20,000 (lot 1168), and a 1922 Sydney sovereign estimated at $30,000 (lot 1270).

Alan McRae has consigned his holey dollar and dump (lot 1165 and 1166) among a number of interesting cut and countermarked coins spread throughout the catalogue.

Further selections from the late Dr. V.J.A. Flynn collection are included, particularly in the British series (there are in total over five hundred silver crowns of Great Britain) and the ancient Roman series.

This sale also contains part IV of a 19th and 20th century world collection, this part mainly comprising crowns from North, Central, and South America.

The feature of the ancient coins on the fourth day is the Brian Bolton Collection of Greek and Roman Coins, one of the finest ever formed in New Zealand.

A careful perusal of the Order of Sale pages will reveal where items of interest may be found. On behalf of the company, I would like to thank all our consignors for their contributions to what is an exciting auction; also, to our dedicated staff and consultants for their efforts. I, along with the staff, look forward to being of assistance at the viewing and at the auction.
