Haeger Potteries

A classic ceramics company out of Dundee, Illinois, Haeger pottery celebrates the richness of Midwestern clay in its designs. Haeger Potteries was founded in 1852 by David H. Haeger, who had recently emigrated from Germany.

Haeger Potteries began with a location along the Fox River, chosen for its abundant clay and the water necessary to run machinery. Soon after opening, Haeger diversified his business by purchasing the Dundee Brickyard in 1871, which afforded Haeger the opportunity to produce decorative tile.

The success of Haeger Potteries continued to grow after expansion, so much so that by the early 20th century, Haeger’s products included glassware, tea ware, and luncheon ware. Haeger’s offerings expanded further in the '30s, when Royal Arden Hickman became one of the company’s designers.

• Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Haeger’s tiles proved influential in the rebuilding of city
• Haeger’s presentation at Chicago’s "Century of Progress" exhibition of 1934 was so extensive that it included a completely functional ceramic device that made instant souvenir ceramic pieces for visitors
• According to Haeger records, Haeger still holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest hand-thrown ceramic vessel, which measured over eight feet tall and totaled more than 650 pounds
