In 2019, Street art was described as a “global commercial juggernaut,” with works by Banksy and Basquiat selling for stratospheric prices in evening sales. This subversive art movement, however, wasn’t always embraced by art world elite. So how did a highly specialized collecting category rise to become a headliner? This panel will convene experts from a wide range of specialized categories, from African-American fine art to space memorabilia and Soviet art. Panelists will discuss key issues in specialized fields such as establishing departments, sourcing consignments, how to cultivate, nurture and grow a buyer base – and why an entrepreneurial spirit may be the key to success.
Panelists: Tom Best (Director & Auctioneer of The Auction Collective), Nigel Freeman (Director, African American Fine Art of Swann Auction Galleries), Bobby Livingston (Executive Vice President, RR Auction), and Gene Shapiro (President of Shapiro Auctions)
Moderator: Sarah Greenberg (Founder & Director of Evergreen Arts)
