What are the different ways to shop on Invaluable?

There are a few different ways to shop on Invaluable, including bidding in both live and timed auctions, as well as buying items at a fixed-price through our “Buy Now” offering. If there is something you wish to purchase from an auction house on Invaluable, you have the option to bid live in real-time during the auction, or place an absentee bid prior to the sale, allowing you to get in on the action ahead of live bidding that takes place once the auction kicks off. Once a live auction begins, Invaluable bidders gain access to an online bidding console so that you can follow and participate in the auction in real time.

Items listed as “Buy Now” are available for purchase from galleries and dealers at any time, and you can click to check out and buy as you would on any other online marketplace.

How can I contact an auction house or gallery?
There are a few ways that you can get in touch with an auction house or gallery that sells on Invaluable!

Follow the steps below if you need to contact a seller whose auction you’ve registered for, whose items you’ve placed absentee bids on, or whose items you’ve saved. These messages will be sent through Invaluable’s message center.
  1. Log into your Invaluable account.
  2. Hover over the user icon/name in the upper right, and click Auctions, Bids, or Saved Items from the drop down menu.
  3. From the Auctions and Bids pages, click View Options from below the item or auction, then Contact Seller.
  4. From the Saved Items page, click the envelope icon next to the seller’s name.

Follow the steps below if you have not registered, bid, or saved items from the seller.
  1. Go to the Auction House or Gallery profile page. You can do this by clicking the seller’s name on a catalog or item page, or by searching the Auction House Directory or Gallery Directory.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the profile page.
  3. Click Contact Auction House to send a message through the Invaluable message center.
  4. Alternatively, click Show Locations to see additional information about the seller, including a phone number to call them directly.
How can I sell items on Invaluable?
In order to be a seller on Invaluable, you must have the proper business and/or auctioneer’s license to operate in your state or country. If you are interested in learning more about how to connect your business with 3 million art and collectible buyers, please visit this page and provide the requested information.

If you are an individual and are interested in consigning items, please note that Invaluable is not able to sell items on your behalf. We encourage you to get in touch with one of our auction house partners directly to inquire if they are accepting consignments.
How does online bidding work?

Through Invaluable, you can enjoy the excitement of bidding in auctions around the world from the comfort of your home. You can place an absentee bid before the auction begins, allowing you to get in on the action ahead of live bidding that takes place once the auction kicks off. Once a live auction begins, Invaluable bidders gain access to an online bidding console so that you can follow and participate in the auction in real time. 

How can I get more information about an auction or item that I found on your site?

If you would like more information about a piece available on Invaluable, we recommend you contact the auction house, gallery or dealer directly. Contact information can be found on the Auction House and Gallery pages in the Directory. You can also click “Request Info” on the right hand side on each item page.

Do I have to create an account to use your site?

No, you are not required to create an account to browse Invaluable but creating a free Invaluable account is simple and takes less than 3 minutes.

With a free Invaluable account you can:

  1. Purchase “Buy Now” items, as well as place bids in Live and Timed auctions
  2. Send messages directly to Invaluable’s auction house, gallery and dealer partners
  3. Sign up to receive email alerts for upcoming items that match your interests, as well as “follow” sellers you are interested in receiving updates from
  4. Search the past 12 months of auction price results
Are there fees for bidding online?

Creating an Invaluable account is free. We offer optional paid subscriptions that allow you to view price information of pieces sold in the past 5 to 15+ years.

For “Buy Now” items, buyers are responsible for shipping, handling, and other fees including applicable taxes, if any. For auctions, buyers are responsible for the fees for items won at auction, in addition to tax and shipping. Each auction house may charge a buyer's premium (which is an additional fee that a winning bidder is required to pay above the auction price) as well as other shipping, handling, and other fees including applicable taxes.

Can I view a live auction without placing bids?

You are certainly welcome to watch a live auction without bidding. This can be a great way to familiarize yourself with the process of bidding at auction. Of course, if you find an item of interest that is being offered, we hope you’ll go ahead and place a bid to join the action.

Buyer’s Premium: Percentage additional charge on the hammer price of a lot sold at auction, which is collected by the auction house as their commission on the item.

Absentee Bid or Pre-Bid: A bid placed before the start of an auction.

Live Auction: Live auctions are simulcast events that allow people to bid for items online using out live bidding software, at the same time as bidders on the auction floor.

Lot: An item, or collection of items to be sold in a group at auction.

Max Bid: The maximum amount that you are willing to pay for the item; this is entered when placing an absentee bid.

Realized Price: The hammer price that an item was sold for.

Reserve: The minimum price that an auctioneer will sell their item for.

Timed Auction: An auction in which the auction house designates a set end time for all items to close, at which point the auction is over and the highest bidder is the winner.

Verified/Unverified: A realized price may be listed as Unverified if the auction house has not verified the price result. If a realized price is listed as Verified, then the auction house has confirmed that it is the correct price result.

Watched Lot: A lot with online bidding on Invaluable that has been saved to your member account. Watched lots make it easier to refer to lots of interest within your account.

How do I create a free Invaluable account?

Creating a free Invaluable account is simple and will allow you to: participate in Live and Timed auctions, access complete upcoming auction catalogs from trusted auction houses around the world, send messages directly to Invaluable’s auction house partners, receive email alerts for upcoming lots that match your interests, and search the past 12 months of auction price results. 

To register with Invaluable, just follow these steps:

  1. Click the Sign Up link at the top of the page.
  2. Enter your email address and password, then click Create Account
  3. Enter your personal information on the registration page, then click Sign Up
  4. Set up keyword and category alerts now and click Finish, or click Skip This Step
  5. You’ll see a message confirming that your registration is complete!
I’m trying to create an account but it says my email address is invalid, what should I do?
If you are getting an error message that says “Please enter a valid email address”, please confirm that you have typed your email address correctly. If you're entering your email address correctly but are still getting this error, then you might already have an Invaluable account registered to that email address! You can try logging in as a returning user instead, or follow the steps below to reset your password:
     
  1. Click the Log In link in the upper right of Invaluable.com
  2. Click the Forgot Password? link.
  3. Enter the email address associated with your account and click Request Info.
  4. If Invaluable has an account that corresponds to that email address, you will receive an email with a link for you to click on to reset your password.
Why can’t I sign in with my email address?
If you already have an account with Invaluable and are getting an error that your email address or password is incorrect, please click Forgot Password to receive an email with instructions to reset your password.

If you requested a Forgot Password email and received an error that no user is registered with that email address, please click Sign Up in the top right to create a new account.
I forgot my sign in information. What should I do?

If you already have an Invaluable account and are having trouble signing in, please follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Log In link in the upper right of Invaluable.com
  2. Click the Forgot Password? Link.
  3. Enter the email address associated with your account and Request Info.
  4. If Invaluable has an account that corresponds to that email address, you will receive an email with a link for you to click on to reset your password.
How do I change my password?

You can change the password for your Invaluable account by following the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and current password.
  2. Click on the user icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
  3. Navigate to My Account > Edit Profile & Email Preferences.
  4. Enter your new password then click Save Changes.
How do I update my name and address?

You can update the personal information in your Invaluable account by following the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Click on the user icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
  3. Navigate to My Account > Edit Contact Info.
  4. Make any necessary updates and click Save Changes.
How do I update my billing and credit card info?

You can update the billing and credit card information in your Invaluable account by following the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Click on the user icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
  3. Navigate to Subscriptions > Edit Billing Info OR click the Billing Info link in your dashboard.
  4. Select a card that you have on file and click Edit to make changes or click Add A New Card to add new credit card info.
An auction house said that I have unpaid items in my account, what is this and how can I fix it?
An auction house will file a dispute if you won an item during an auction and have not made payment. When the dispute was filed by the auction house, you would have received an email notifying you of an unpaid item reminder. If you cannot find an email about this, there should also be a copy of the message in your Invaluable message center.

As disputes are filed by the auction house, you will need to to contact the auction house directly to resolve the dispute or unpaid item.
I contacted an auction house about disputes they filed against me but they haven’t responded, what should I do?
If you have tried to contact the seller by email and phone but have not heard back, please contact us for further assistance. We will contact the seller on your behalf to request an update. Note that dispute resolution is at the sole discretion of the auction house, but we will assist you in communicating with them about it.
If I update my info after registering or placing a bid, will the auction house get my latest info?

Information that you’ve updated in your account will be provided to auction houses that you register with for future sales. If you’ve updated personal information required by an auction house that you have already registered with, please contact the auction house directly to confirm the most up to date information.

I have a paid Subscription. How do I change its renewal method or cancel it?

To change the renewal method of a current paid subscription, please follow the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Click on the user icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
  3. Navigate to Subscriptions >Subscription Info
  4. Select the option to turn auto-renewal on or off and click Save.
How do I close my account?
If you no longer wish to have an active Invaluable account, please contact our Customer Care team. We can unsubscribe you from all emails and place the account on hold. Should you wish to use the account in the future, you will need to contact us again to re-activate your account.
Auctions and Registration
What types of auctions do you offer? What are the different types of bidding?

There are two types of auctions available for online bidding through Invaluable, Live and Timed. Each auction type has an icon associated with it. The Timed icon is a clock, and the Live icon looks like an internet signal strength icon.

Live auctions are real time sales that allow you watch the auction in progress and participate during the sale. The date and time you see listed for Live sales are the time the auction begins. You can place an absentee bid on a lot in a live sale, up until the time that lot is opened for live bidding. If you are the highest absentee bidder, our system will place your bids automatically, one increment higher than the last in-room bid, until we have reached your maximum bid.

You can also place live bids during the auction. If you have registered and been approved to bid by the auction house, please follow the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Click Auctions > Upcoming Auctions
  3. Locate the auction you would like to bid in, and click the Happening Now button to open the bidder console.
  4. When the teal Bid Now button displays the price you would like to bid, just click the button to place your bid.

Timed auctions are internet-only auctions that are run for a set duration and available for absentee bidding only. These auctions allow you to place bids until the scheduled end time for a particular lot. Whoever has the highest bid when the time runs out wins the lot. The date and time you see listed for Timed auctions are the time that bidding on the first lot ends.

 

Do I have to register for an auction before I can start placing bids?

To participate in an Invaluable Live or Timed auction, you must first register to bid for the sale. Each auction house has different methods for approving bidders, so we encourage you to register for auctions ahead of time so that the house is able to review your registration. You’ll be notified by email when your request has been approved. You can also check your status anytime by clicking the Welcome link in the navigation bar, then Approved Auctions to view a list of auctions for which you’ve registered.

How do I register to bid for an upcoming auction?

To register to bid for an upcoming auction, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Upcoming Auctions page to see a list of all future sales.
  2. Click the Register to Bid link that is displayed beneath the Happening Now or View Items button for each sale.
  3. You are now on the Sign-In/Register page. If you already have an Invaluable account, enter your email address and password to continue to the registration page.
  4. Provide the information requested by the auction house and be sure to check off the confirmation box at the bottom of the registration page to agree to the house’s terms and conditions. Then click Register to Bid. The auction house will review your request to bid and notify you if you have been approved.
  5. If you do not yet have an Invaluable account, you'll need to create one before you can participate in any auctions on Invaluable. To get started, click Sign Up and enter the requested information.

You may also save a step and register while placing an absentee bid. If you find a lot you like, simply enter your maximum bid. If you are not logged in, you will be taken to a page where you may either log in or create a new account. If you are already logged in, you will be taken directly to the next step, in which you are asked to enter registration info, agree to the terms and conditions, and review your bid. By submitting the bid you are also registering for the auction.

I registered to bid in an auction. How do I know if I’m approved?

You'll be notified by email when your request to bid has been approved. You can also check your status anytime by clicking the user icon in the upper right, then My Auctions to view a list of auctions for which you've registered.

What does it mean if my auction registration is pending?

Approval to bid in any Invaluable sale is at the auction house's discretion. We recommend that you contact the auction house directly if you have any questions about your request for approval to bid.

How to contact an auction house:

  1. Log in using your email and password.
  2. Click the user icon in the upper right, then click My Auctions from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click the white envelope icon next to the selected sale.
  4. In the new message window, select Bidding Approval from the drop-down menu, enter your message and click Send.
  5. Please note that any bids placed while you are in Pending mode will not get presented to the auctioneer on sale day if you have not been approved by the time the lot comes up for auction.

Why have I been approved to bid in an auction that I didn’t register for?

To allow you to participate in auctions more easily, once you have registered and been approved to bid once with a particular auction house, we automatically submit a request on your behalf for all future auctions with that auction house. This means that you will no longer have to register for each and every auction, and will only need to submit a request for approval if you find a new auction house that you would like to participate with.

Who do I contact for questions about an auction’s terms and conditions?

Each auction house has a particular set of terms in place for their auction. You must review and agree to the terms and conditions when registering or bidding in an upcoming auction. Should have any questions about an auction's terms, please contact that auction house directly.

Bidding
How do I leave an absentee bid before a Live auction begins?

Placing a bid before the auction begins is typically referred to as an absentee bid. This allows you to get in on the action ahead of the live bidding that takes place when the auction kicks off. You can place an absentee bid on a lot in a live sale, up until the time that lot is opened for live bidding. If you are the highest absentee bidder, our system will place your bids automatically, one increment higher than the last in-room bid, until we have reached your maximum bid.

How to leave an absentee bid:

  1. When you find a lot you’d like to bid on, enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for that lot and submit with the Leave Bid button.
  2. If you are not logged in, you will be taken to a page where you may either log in or create a new account. If you are already logged in, you will be taken directly to the next step.
  3. If you have already been approved to bid in this auction, you will just need to review and confirm your bid. If you have not yet been approved you’ll be taken to a page where you are asked to enter registration info, agree to the terms and conditions, and review your bid.
  4. When you submit the bid you are also registering for the auction.
How do I bid in real-time during a Live auction?

Once a live auction begins, Invaluable bidders gain access to an exclusive online bidding console that simulates all of the aspects of being at the auction house in person. If you have registered and been approved to bid by the auction house, you can place live bids by following the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Click Auctions > Upcoming Auctions.
  3. Locate the auction you would like to bid in, and click the Happening Now button to open the bidder console.
  4. When the teal Bid Now button displays the price you would like to bid, just click the button to place your bid.
How does bidding work for Timed auctions?

Timed auctions are internet-only auctions that run for a set duration of time and are available for absentee bidding only. These auctions allow you to place bids until the scheduled end time for a particular item. Whoever has the highest bid when the time runs out wins the item.

Timed auctions allow auctioneers to set reserves for their items, as they aren’t there to monitor the bidding live. A reserve is the minimum price that an auctioneer will sell their item for. Depending on bids placed, a “reserve not met” or “reserve met” message will display next to the bid box for any lots with reserves. If the reserve price has not been met by the time the auction ends, the item will not be sold.

Another unique feature in our timed auctions is extended bidding. Invaluable does not allow sniping. If a bid is placed within the last 5 minutes of a lot's scheduled end time, we extend the sale by 5 minutes from the last bid. This way other bidders have a chance to place a bid. Extended bidding continues until 2 hours after the last lot’s scheduled end time.

How do I know if an item is authentic?
We encourage you to thoroughly review items before bidding and to request any additional information from the auction house prior to the auction, so that you will feel confident in completing the transaction if you are the winning bidder.

You may want to request a detailed condition report, more photos, or additional details that are not in the item description. Note that all images and descriptions are provided by each auction house, so it is best to contact them directly with any questions you have.

We at Invaluable take all feedback very seriously, and we expect all of our partner sellers to represent items honestly and accurately. If you have concerns about any items on Invaluable that you feel have not been satisfactorily addressed by the seller, please contact our Customer Care team.
What is a bid limit? How do I increase it?

Some auction houses set a limit on the amount a bidder can bid for the duration of a sale. You may request to increase this limit prior to the auction. Please follow the steps below to contact the auction house:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password
  2. Click on the user icon in the upper right.
  3. Click My Auctions.
  4. Click Request Limit Increase to the right of the sale
  5. Write your message to the auction house and click Send.
How do I increase my absentee bid?

To increase the maximum amount of your absentee bid, please follow the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Hover over the user icon/name in the upper right, and click Bids from the drop down menu.
  3. Click View Options next to the lot you’d like to increase your bid on, then click Increase Bid.
  4. You'll be taken to the lot page where you can enter a new maximum absentee bid.
Is there a way to cancel an absentee bid that I already placed?

Yes, however there are different rules for cancelling bids in Live and Timed sales.

  • For Live Auctions: You can cancel an absentee bid placed in a Live sale up until the time that lot is opened for live bidding.
  • For Timed Auctions: You can cancel an absentee bid placed in a Timed sale up until two hours prior to the auction’s first lot end time, and a maximum of three bids may be cancelled per session.

To cancel an absentee bid, please follow the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Hover over the user icon/name in the upper right, and click Bids from the drop down menu.
  3. Click View Options next to the lot you’d like to cancel your bid on, then click Cancel Bid.
  4. A window will pop up asking if you’re sure you want to cancel your bid, and you will need to click Yes to confirm the bid cancellation.
I accidentally bid on an item, what should I do?
Absentee bids can be cancelled through your Invaluable account. For live auctions, you can cancel an absentee bid up until the time that lot is opened for live bidding. For timed auctions, you can cancel an absentee bid up until 2 hours prior to the auction’s first lot end time.

If you accidentally placed a bid during a live auction, you will need to contact the auction house directly to explain the accidental bid and see if they are able to assist you. If your accidental bid was the winning bid during a live auction, please note that the cancellation of a sale is at the sole discretion of the auction house.
Where can I view all of the bids I have placed?

To view a list of the bids you have placed on Invaluable, please follow the steps below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Click on the user icon in the upper right.
  3. Click the My Bids link.

At the top of page, you can click the link to switch between viewing your upcoming and past bids

What does it mean if I am the high bidder on an item?

Being the high bidder on an item means that you currently have the highest absentee bid on Invaluable.

  • For Live Auctions: Being the highest bidder on a lot in a live sale is not a guarantee that you will win the item, as your bid will be competing with live floor bids. Our system will place bids on your behalf on increment until your maximum bid amount is reached. If your absentee bid was highest, your bid history will show you the time when your bid was presented to the internet clerk during the live auction.
  • For Timed Auctions: If you are the highest bidder when a lot in a timed sale closes for bidding, you will be the winning bidder of that item.
What does it mean if my bid is pending?

If a bid is pending, that means that the auction house as not approved your registration to bid.

Please note that any bids placed while your approval is pending will not get presented to the auctioneer on sale day if you have not been approved by the time the lot comes up for auction. Approval to bid is at the discretion of the auction house, therefore, if you have any questions about your registration please contact the auction house directly.

How can I view the bid history for an item I bid on?

You can view the bidding history on any lot you placed a bid on in your Invaluable user dashboard. To do so, follow the instructions below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Hover over the user icon/name in the upper right, and click Bids from the drop down menu.
  3. Select the toggle next to Past to view past bids instead of current bids.
  4. This will show you a list of your past bids. Click the link to View Bid History to see the complete bidding history on a lot.
How do I know if my bid was accepted?

You can view the bidding history on any lot you placed a bid on in your Invaluable user dashboard. To do so, follow the instructions below:

  1. Sign into your Invaluable account using your email address and password.
  2. Hover over the user icon/name in the upper right, and click Bids from the drop down menu.
  3. Select the toggle next to Past to view past bids instead of current bids.
  4. This will show you a list of your past bids. Click the link to View Bid History to see the complete bidding history on a lot.
What does absentee push mean in my bid history?
Absentee push is what happens if there is a maximum absentee bid on the lot at the same amount of a live bid being submitted. Since the absentee bid was placed prior to the live bid, the absentee bid takes priority and is presented to the clerk.

For example, if an absentee bidder has a maximum bid of $100 placed on a lot, our system submits bids on behalf of that bidder until their maximum is reached. When the lot opens for bidding, if the ask price reaches $100 and a live online bidder submits a bid at this amount, our system would notice that there is an absentee bid that should be presented to the clerk at this amount instead.

What is Invaluable’s new Buy Now offering? How does it work?

Invaluable’s new Buy Now offering makes it even easier for collectors and buyers to find what they love on our marketplace. Galleries, dealers and auction houses now have the ability to upload items for immediate purchase, along with items available at upcoming auctions. Merchandise being offered for immediate sale through galleries, dealers and auction houses will appear in our search results amongst items being offered at auction – and will also be integrated into our keyword and category alerts to help you find what you’re looking for.

What is the difference between a Buy Now item and an auction lot?

With the launch of the new Buy Now offering, there are now two ways to shop on Invaluable. While all merchandise available on Invaluable will show up in search results and on category pages, some items will available for immediate purchase through our Buy Now offering, and others are available for bidding through an upcoming auction taking place on Invaluable. Items available for immediate sale will be noted with a “Buy Now” button and a shopping cart icon, while items being offered at auction will be noted with a starting bid increment and a “Leave Bid” button.

Can I filter my search to look at only Buy Now items?

On both search results and in category pages, you are able to filter the types of items you see by checking the boxes at the top of the page to filter by “All Items”, “Auction” or “Buy Now”. You can also sort “Buy Now” results by price and by those that were most recently added.

Can I save alerts for Buy Now items?

Your keyword alert will include Buy Now items along with items being offered at auction. You also have the ability to “Favorite” items that you like, which will make it easy to go back to view them within your account.

How is the tax calculated on Buy Now items?

The tax rate is dependent on the location of your billing address.

Can I pay with check or cash for my Buy Now item? Do you accept PayPal?

All Buy Now items must be paid by credit or debit card at the time of check out. These items are not eligible for payment via check, cash or other payments solutions.

Why do you need my credit card?

A valid credit or debit card is required to pay for all Buy Now items on Invaluable, and will be charged at the time of purchase.

Why do I need to pay for Buy Now items individually?

Currently, you can only check out with one item at a time – you cannot add multiple items to your cart at once. For example, if you buy two items from the same seller, you will receive two separate invoices and two separate confirmation emails. This is something we are working on updating in the near future.

What does it mean if an item is no longer available?

If you receive a notice that the item is no longer available, that means the item has sold to another buyer.

What does it mean that shipping will be handled after the item is purchased?

In some cases, shipping will not be included up front, and the seller will be contacting you to arrange shipping following the sale. In this case, you will receive a separate shipping invoice via email following the initial sale.

If I check out and shipping is not included, how will I pay for that?

You will receive a separate shipping invoice via email that will include the shipping costs. You can pay the shipping fees via credit card directly through the invoice. The invoice will also be available within your account on Invaluable.

How the shipping costs are calculated?

Each seller works with preferred vendors for shipping, and those vendors determine the shipping cost based on your location in relation to the seller.

How do I coordinate shipping?

In some cases, shipping will be included up front. In other cases, shipping will be communicated by the seller following the transaction. In that case, the buyer will see a note on the invoice saying that “excludes shipping, which is arranged after purchase” and the seller will be in touch to coordinate.

Why do some galleries only ship to certain countries?

Sellers on Invaluable are able to set which countries they are able to ship to. If you would like to buy an item and the seller does not ship to your country, you will need to contact that seller to discuss arranging shipping separately from your purchase.

What does shipping status mean in my account?

Shipping status in your account pertains to whether or not shipping has been paid. Once shipping has been worked out between you and the seller, they will most often provide a tracking number so you can track the status of your package.

Payments
How do I know if I won an item?

If you win an item, you will receive an email with information regarding the lot and your winning bid. Additionally, all information regarding your bid is displayed in the lot details section of the bidder’s console if you participate in a Live sale, as well as in your My Invaluable account.

In the Bidders Console of a Live Sale:

  1. If you win an item, a brief “Congratulations” message will appear in teal in the left section of the console, along with a shower of confetti!
  2. When the sale progresses, a teal overlay reading “YOU WON!” will appear over the lot that you won.

From your My Invaluable Account:

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Click the user icon in the upper right
  3. Click Lots Won. Next to your bid you should see the lot and your winning bid amount.
When will I receive my invoice?

Invoices are typically sent by the auction house within 24 to 48 hours after the sale concludes. If the sale took place on a weekend or holiday, you may want to allow extra time for the house to send the invoice. If you have inquiries about the status of your invoice, it is best to contact the auction house directly.

How do I pay for the item I won?

Each individual auction house on the Invaluable platform determines their preferred method of payment. Some may prefer cash or a check, while others accept credit cards or offer the option to use PayPal. You can find the specific methods accepted by the auction house you’re working with in their terms and conditions. Typically, the auction house will send an invoice to the email address associated with your Invaluable account within 24 to 48 hours after the sale concludes, which will include payment instructions. 

If I win an item, are there additional fees?

When you win an item on Invaluable, you will receive an invoice from the auction house that outlines the additional fees, which include the buyer’s premium, the Invaluable service fee and any applicable taxes. The auction house may also apply additional fees for shipping and handling of the item.

I thought I won an item but the auction house says I did not. What should I do?

Though infrequent, it is possible for a clerk to accidentally sell a lot to the incorrect bidder. If you believe that you won a lot but the auction house refutes your claim, it is best to communicate with the auction house directly to determine why the miscommunication occurred. By doing so, both auction house and bidder can come to a clear resolution of the situation.

What is online payment on Invaluable?

We are pleased to introduce the ability for buyers to submit payment via credit or debit card directly through Invaluable for items won from participating auction houses. Auction houses offering online payment will be noted with credit card icons. You can also check the “Payment” tab on lot details page or look in the terms and conditions section to find the specific methods accepted by the auction house you’re working with, as not all auction houses offer this option.

How does online payment on Invaluable work?

When registering to bid with a participating auction house, enter your preferred credit or debit card information. If you win an item during the auction, you can conveniently pay with the card on file after you receive your invoice, or you will also have the option to enter information for another card after the auction through your MyInvaluable account.

How will I know if an auction house offers the online payment option?

Auction houses offering online payment will be noted with credit card icons. You can also check the “Payment” tab on lot details page or look in the terms and conditions section to find the specific methods accepted by the auction house you’re working with, as not all auction houses offer this option.

Can I use the Invaluable app for iPad and iPhone to pay for my items won at auction?

Yes, if an auction house offers payment through Invaluable, you can pay for your items using our app for iPhone and iPad.

Can I use the Invaluable mobile site to pay for my items won at auction?

Unfortunately online payments are not accepted through Invaluable’s mobile site (m.invaluable.com) at this time, though it does indicate which houses offer the online payment option. Please navigate to the full desktop site, or download the Invaluable app for iPad or iPhone, in order to pay for your item.

Which credit cards are accepted through online payments?

For participating auction houses, you can now pay for your items with any major credit or debit card (Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover), in addition to previously available payment forms. As noted, accepted credit cards and other methods of payment vary by auction house, so please check the "Payment" tab for details under the item you are interested in.

What currencies are currently accepted for online payments?

We currently accept USD and CAD, and plan to add additional currency options in 2016.

How soon after I win an item will I be able to pay online?

With online payment, you will be able to pay for your items as soon as you receive an invoice from the auctioneer. If you do not pay within four days of receiving your invoice, the auction house has the option to automatically charge the credit card you have on file for your won items.

Are there any restrictions on which items can be paid for using online payments?

There are certain restrictions on which items can be purchased using online payments. Certain types of items, including firearms, ammunition, alcohol, tobacco products, e-cigarettes, cars, boats, real estate and airplanes cannot be purchased using online payment. If you are purchasing one of these items, please check the “Payment” tab in lot details for other acceptable forms of payment. You will be notified in your invoice if an item is not eligible for online payment, and you will be asked to contact the auction house directly.

Can I also pay for shipping costs using online payments?

This varies by auction house. Please check the “Shipping” tab on the lot details page for information on shipping your won items. If you are using a third-party shipping vendor, you will receive a separate invoice for shipping and handling.

Shipping
How does shipping work?

Each auction house has a particular process to arrange shipment of items. There are many factors taken into consideration to determine the proper shipping method, including weight, value, type of lot and distance it must travel. It is best to review the terms and conditions for the particular Auction House you’re working with before placing a bid, and to contact that house directly. 

I haven’t received my items yet, when will they ship?
Each auction house and gallery has their own shipping terms, so the shipping process varies. Some sellers may have an in-house shippers, others may put you in touch with a shipping company they work with, or you may need to arrange shipping with a shipping company near the seller.

If you aren’t sure, we recommend contacting the auction house or gallery directly for clarification. You can also review the invoice you received, as that may include shipping details as well, or shipping terms of the seller.

To review any shipping terms from a sale:
1. Go to your Won Lots
2. Click the item you won
3. Scroll down and expand the Payment & Shipping section.
Can you provide me with a tracking number?
Invaluable is not able to provide you with a tracking number or shipping updates, as we are not in possession of the items listed. Please contact the auction house or gallery directly to request any shipping updates. If you have tried to contact the seller by email and phone, but have not heard back, please contact us for further assistance. We will contact the seller on your behalf to request an update.
I have questions about the package I received, who should I contact?
If you received your items but something appears to be missing, damaged, or not what you were expecting, please contact the auction house or gallery as soon as possible. Each seller has their own policies for handling post-sale concerns, so they are the best ones to speak with about resolving any issues. If you have tried to contact the seller by email and phone, but have not heard back, please contact us for further assistance. We will contact the seller on your behalf to facilitate communication.
Search and Price Archive
How do I save an item that I’m interested in?

Saving items that interest you allows to you easily reference the items in the future. If the item is in an upcoming auction, you’ll also receive an email alert the day before the auction. To save an item, follow the steps below:

  1. Log into your Invaluable account.
  2. Navigate to the item you’re interested in.
  3. Click the heart icon to the right of the photos.
  4. The heart icon should turn pink, indicating that you’ve saved the item.
When you’re signed into your account, you can easily view your saved items at any time by clicking the heart icon in the top right of Invaluable.
How do I save a Search?

To save a specific search, complete the following steps

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Perform a search using the search bar in the upper right corner
  3. Click Save to my Saved Searches at the top of the search results page
  4. When saved, Save to my Saved Searches will read Saved to my Searches
How do I search for a particular artist?

There are multiple ways to search for the works of a particular artist in Upcoming Auctions, the Price Archive, and your personal Alerts.

How to search for an artist in an upcoming auction:

  1. Type the name of the artist in the search bar
  2. Press enter, or click the magnifying glass icon

How to search for an artist in our Price Archive:

  1. Click Price Archive at the bottom of the page
  2. Type the name of the artist in the Keywords text box
  3. Click Search

How to search for an artist and add them to your Alerts:

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Click the user icon in the upper right corner
  3. Select Keyword/Artist Alerts under Manage Alerts
  4. Under Add Artist Alerts, search for artist by name and click the artist’s name

The Artist's name will now appear in your list of Artist Alerts

What is the Price Archive? How does it work?

The Invaluable Price Archive is an expansive database of prices realized spanning decades of auction sales from all over the world. The Price Archive is a fantastic resource for collectors, buyers, institutions, researchers and art enthusiasts.

To access the Price Archive, you must create an account with Invaluable. Any user may search auction data, but certain advanced search functionality and auction information may require a subscription.

To search the Price Archive, simply log in to Invaluable and click Price Archive at the bottom of the page. Type in desired key words or phrases and click Search.

Can you appraise or sell an item that I have?
Invaluable is not able to sell or appraise items directly. To appraise or sell your item, we suggest that you contact one of our auction house partners. You can find a list of our partners in our auction house directory.

We also recommend doing an advanced search for past items, so that you can see which houses have sold items like yours and reach out to them. The advanced search option is found above the search bar at the top of the page, or or by clicking here.

To contact an auction house, go to the bottom of their auction house profile page and either click "Contact auction house" to send a message through Invaluable, or click "Show locations" to see a phone number.

We encourage you to create an account to learn more about our extensive Price Archive. With a free Invaluable account, you can view up to 12 months of past auction results that you can use to see what items similar to yours have sold for previously.
I saw something about paid Subscriptions. How is this different from the free account?

With a free Invaluable account, you will have access to up to 12 months of past auction prices. If you would like to find auction prices further than the past 12 months, you may be interested in one of our subscriptions.

We have varying subscription levels to our Price Archive: our Premium subscription provides access to the last five years in the archive, and the Professional provides access to the last 15+ years. In addition to unlimited searches, every subscription level also includes special access to the most exclusive catalogs, including Christie's and Sotheby's.

Emails and Alerts
How do I set up email alerts for keywords?

To set up email alerts for keywords, complete the following steps:

  1. Type the name of the item or term you are looking for into the search box at the top of your page, then hit ENTER. This will take you to a search results page.
  2. Once on the search results page, click the "Follow this Keyword" button to the right of your search term. If you are not signed in to an Invaluable account, you will be prompted to sign in or create an account.
  3. The plus sign (+) inside the button will change to a checkmark to indicate you are now following that keyword.
How do I remove alerts that I have saved?

To remove saved alerts, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Click the user icon in the upper right corner
  3. Select Artist/Keyword Alerts under Manage Alerts
    1. Check the box next to the left of the artist/keyword
    2. Click the Delete Selected link to remove
  4. Select Alerts>Live Category Alerts
    1. Uncheck the box next to selected categories
    2. Click Save Changes
How do I unsubscribe or update my email preferences?

If you no longer wish to receive the Invaluable weekly newsletter, featured auction emails or pre-approval emails, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Click the user icon in the upper right corner
  3. Select View Account Dashboard
  4. Select My Account>Edit Profile and Email Preferences
  5. Uncheck the appropriate boxes at the bottom of the page
  6. Click Save Changes

If you no longer wish to receive Invaluable category alert emails, please complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Click the welcome icon in the upper right corner
  3. Select Category Alerts under Manage Alerts
  4. Click the No bubble next to Receive Category Alerts
  5. Click Save Changes

Please note that it may take up to seven business days for unsubscribe requests to be fully processed. If you continue to receive emails seven days after unsubscribing, please contact Customer Care.

Do you offer text message alerts?

Invaluable offers text messages alerts for bidders leaving absentee bids on a sale. Text message alerts allow bidders with absentee bids to receive text-message (SMS) alerts if outbid and when the lot they bid on is coming up to auction. Mobile alerts not available on all carriers. Normal text messaging fees from your carrier may apply.

To receive text message alerts, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to Invaluable
  2. Navigate to the desired sale and lot
  3. Leave an absentee bid
  4. When reviewing and confirming your bid, check the box next to I would like to receive text (SMS) alerts at and select the appropriate country and provide your mobile number.
  5. Read the auction house’s Terms & Conditions and check the box next to I have read and agree to this auction's terms and conditions.
  6. Click Place Bid

I’m trying to watch a live auction, but keep seeing a spinning wheel and it says “Attempting to reconnect…”. What’s wrong?
Your bidder console connection may be failing due to a firewall or an antivirus installed on your computer.

If you are at a corporate office or in a public place, such as a library, there may be a firewall on the network that is blocking the connection. Please try to open the bidder console off of this network to determine if that location’s firewall is the problem.

If you have an antivirus program on your computer, please try to temporarily disable the antivirus and re-open the bidder console. If you have disabled your antivirus but still cannot connect to the auction, please contact us for further assistance.
