Chinese Necklaces & Pendants

Jewelry in Neolithic times was originally worn for its talismanic qualities. Images of animals were crafted and worn as necklaces or pendants in order to ward off evil and provide protection to the wearer. Later, necklaces and pendants of jade, ivory, gold, silver, glass beads, and kingfisher feathers alike were worn by the most esteemed and wealthy members of society. Some Chinese necklaces and amulets were even made by knotting cord into intricate flower-like patterns.

The motifs depicted on Chinese necklaces and pendants withstood the test of time and today remain significant to the Chinese. Often, motifs were geared toward the hope that a couple’s son would pass the Civil Service Examinations, which was viewed as the only way to move up in society. To this day, necklaces and pendants with various symbolic animals or illustrations of famous allegories are gifted in order to bring good omens.
