G Scale Model Railroads & Trains

G scale refers to model train locomotives and cars that are made in the correct size to run on G gauge track, which references a distance between the model railroad rails of 45 millimeters, or about 1.75 inches. The name G comes from the German word "gro?," or big. In recent years, the name G scale has been misinterpreted by many individuals to mean garden, as G scale model trains are often run outdoors.

G scale was first produced by the Lehman Patentwerk company of Germany. Founded in 1881, Lehman Patentwerk began producing G scale model trains in 1968 under the brand name LGB. This stands for "Lehman Gross Bahn," or Lehman Big Train. Other manufacturers followed suit and G scale products by Bachmann, Aristocraft, USA Trains, and others appeared on the model railroad market.

G scale model railroad products are durable and usually suitable for outdoors. LGB and other manufacturers offer track made of brass, which can remain outside in all types of weather. Stainless steel track, which resists oxidation, is also used, although this track is more expensive.
